Frequently Asked Questions

Have questions? You’re not alone.

Starting parent coaching can feel like a big step, and it’s natural to want to know what to expect. Below are answers to some of the most common questions families ask about ABA-based parent coaching, including how sessions work, what concerns we can address, and how this service can support your child and your family.

What is ABA-based parent coaching?

ABA-based parent coaching is a collaborative service that teaches parents practical strategies grounded in the principles of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA). The goal is to help you better understand your child’s behavior, build communication and daily living skills, and reduce challenging behaviors in your home and community.

How is parent coaching different from ABA therapy?

Parent coaching is designed to support and educate caregivers rather than provide direct therapy to your child. During coaching sessions, you will learn how to use evidence-based strategies in everyday routines. This service is not a substitute for ABA therapy, speech therapy, occupational therapy, or medical care.

Who is parent coaching for?

Parent coaching is ideal for:

-Parents of children with autism, developmental delays, or intellectual and developmental disabilities

-Families who are waiting to begin therapy services

-Parents who want to feel more confident managing behaviors at home

-Families seeking practical support with communication, routines, and independence

-Caregivers who want guidance without committing to intensive therapy services

What kinds of concerns can parent coaching help with?

Parent coaching can help with:

- Tantrums and meltdowns

- Difficulty with transitions

- Aggression, hitting, biting, or property destruction

- Communication challenges

-Toilet training

- Sleep routines

- Daily routines such as dressing, bathing, and mealtime

- Teaching independence and self-help skills

- Sibling and family stress related to challenging behavior

Do I need a diagnosis to participate?

No. A formal diagnosis is not required. Parent coaching can benefit any family seeking evidence-based strategies to support their child’s behavior, communication, and daily functioning.

What ages do you work with?

Parent coaching is available for families with children of all ages, from toddlers through adolescence.

Do you work with children who are not autistic?

Yes. While many families I support have children with autism or intellectual and developmental disabilities, ABA principles can be used to address a wide range of behavioral and developmental concerns.

What happens during a coaching session?

Sessions are individualized to your family’s needs and may include:

- Reviewing current concerns and progress

- Identifying why behaviors are occurring

- Teaching practical strategies

- Modeling how to implement techniques

- Developing visual supports and routines

- Troubleshooting challenges between sessions

- Creating step-by-step action plans

Are sessions virtual or in person?

All parent coaching sessions are conducted virtually, allowing families to receive support from the comfort of their home.

How long are sessions?

Sessions are 60 minutes unless otherwise specified in your package.

How often do we meet?

Most families choose weekly or biweekly sessions, depending on the level of support they need. Recommendations are made during your consultation based on your goals.

Will my child attend the sessions?

In most cases, coaching sessions are focused on working directly with caregivers. Your child may be present if helpful for observation, modeling, or practicing strategies.

How long does it take to see results?

Every child and family is different. Some parents notice improvements within a few weeks, while more complex concerns may require ongoing support. Progress depends on consistent implementation of the strategies discussed during sessions.

Do you provide customized materials?

Yes. Families may receive visual supports, data sheets, checklists, and other practical tools to help implement strategies at home.

Can parent coaching be used alongside ABA therapy?

Yes. Parent coaching can complement existing services by helping you better understand and generalize the strategies your child is learning in therapy.

What if my child is on a waitlist for services?

Parent coaching is an excellent option for families waiting to start ABA, speech, occupational therapy, or other developmental services.

Is this covered by insurance?

Parent coaching is a private-pay service, non-medical service and is not billed through insurance.

Do you offer a free consultation?

Yes. A complimentary consultation is required before enrolling in ongoing coaching services. This helps determine whether parent coaching is a good fit for your family and allows us to discuss your goals.

What if I need to cancel a session?

Sessions may be rescheduled or canceled with at least 24 hours’ notice. Cancellations made with less than 24 hours’ notice may result in forfeiture of the session fee unless extenuating circumstances apply.

Is there a minimum commitment?

Some families benefit from just a few sessions, while others prefer ongoing support. Package options are designed to provide flexibility based on your needs and goals.

Is parent coaching confidential?

Yes. Information shared during coaching sessions is kept confidential except where disclosure is required by law.

Is this service appropriate for severe or dangerous behaviors?

Parent coaching can provide guidance for many challenging behaviors. However, if your child engages in behaviors that pose an immediate risk to themselves or others, more intensive clinical services may be recommended.

How do I get started?

The first step is to schedule a free consultation. We’ll discuss your concerns, goals, and whether parent coaching is the right fit for your family.
